There is something about holding a pizza skull in your hand that transports you straight to a festive Halloween night Most homemade pizzas are fun but these are downright ghoulish with gooey cheese and flavorful fillings wrapped in golden dough shaped like spooky skulls I started making these with my kids a few Octobers ago and now every year they ask if we can invite friends over for a pizza skull party
Last October we hosted a make your own pizza skull bar letting everyone add their own favorite fillings It turned into a friendly competition over who could make the scariest and tastiest one
Ingredients
- Refrigerated pizza dough: gives a golden crust and lets you skip the mess of making dough from scratch Look for a brand with a good rise and check the expiration date for freshness
- Pizza sauce: brings that classic tangy flavor I love using a thicker sauce so it does not run out during baking Try to avoid overly sweet varieties
- Shredded mozzarella cheese: melts into stretchy gooey goodness Pre shredded cheese works for convenience but fresh mozzarella shredded at home gives the best melt
- Cooked and crumbled Italian sausage: adds a boost of savory flavor Go for mild or spicy depending on your crowd
- Chopped pepperoni: adds pops of zesty spice Choose a thicker cut and chop it so you get little bites in every piece
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven:
- Set your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and let it get nice and hot Meanwhile spray your skull shaped pan well with cooking spray so nothing sticks
- Shape the Dough:
- Unroll your pizza dough and press it out into a fifteen by ten inch rectangle Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice it into six even strips Each strip will line a cavity in your pan
- Line the Skull Cavities:
- Gently drape each strip of dough into the pan cavities making sure to press it up the sides and into every nook Smooth out any air bubbles so the skull shape comes through clearly When I first made these I rushed this step but learned getting the dough flush to every detail makes them look so much spookier
- Fill with Cheese and Sauce:
- Sprinkle a bit of mozzarella into the base of each dough lined cavity Layer a tablespoon of pizza sauce on top spreading it evenly but not overfilling so it doesn’t leak
- Add Meats:
- Drop in chopped pepperoni slices and a spoonful of crumbled cooked sausage This is where you can get creative with fillings If my kids are helping we give everyone a mini bowl of add ins
- Top and Seal:
- Finish with another layer of mozzarella cheese then carefully fold the dough edges over the filling Pinch the seams well so nothing escapes as it bakes
- Bake to Golden Perfection:
- Pop the pan into the oven for eighteen to twenty minutes Watch for that golden brown crust and bubbling cheese The aroma will let you know you are close
- Cool and Unmold:
- Let the pizza skulls cool for a few minutes before gently popping them out of the pan Use a small offset spatula to help lift them out if needed Serve up while warm and watch them disappear

Mozzarella cheese is my favorite part The way it stretches and bubbles inside the skulls makes every bite remind me of our first pizza skull night when my youngest tried to stretch one to the other side of the table and burst out laughing There is something magical about making food that gets everyone at the table smiling
Storage tips
Leftovers keep great in the refrigerator for up to three days Make sure to store them in an airtight container For best results reheat in an oven or air fryer to restore the crust’s crispness Freezing works too just wrap each skull tightly and thaw overnight before warming
Ingredient substitutions
Try swapping the sausage for cooked ground beef or turkey Use vegetarian pepperoni or sautéed veggies like mushrooms and bell pepper for a meat free option If you do not have pizza sauce marinara or even a jarred pesto makes a fun twist
Serving suggestions
Serve with extra pizza sauce or a spooky green pesto for dipping Add a leafy salad on the side to lighten things up My favorite is to set them out on a tray with olive eyeballs and roasted red pepper mouths for a haunted buffet
Cultural context
Shaped hand pies and filled breads have been part of Halloween traditions for centuries Pizza skulls are just a playful modern take on the old custom of making spirit themed foods to share with friends and neighbors

Serve warm and enjoy the spooky fun These pizza skulls will become a new Halloween tradition for your family
