Cooking and Recipes

What if my food doesn't look like the picture?

That's okay! Every kitchen and cook is different. As long as it tastes good, that's what matters. Keep cooking and you'll develop your own style.

Can I skip ingredients I don't have?

Usually yes. Most recipes work even if you're missing one or two things. Just don't skip the main ingredients that make the dish what it is.

How do I know when meat is cooked?

The best way is using a meat thermometer. If you don't have one, we describe how the meat should look and feel when it's done.

What if I don't have the right pan size?

Use what you have. Food might cook a bit faster or slower, so keep an eye on it. Just make sure your pan isn't too small or things might overflow.

My dough didn't rise, what went wrong?

Usually it's the yeast or the temperature. Make sure your yeast is fresh and your kitchen isn't too cold. Give it more time - sometimes dough just needs patience.

Cooking Tips and Techniques

Why did my cake come out dry?

Could be your oven runs hot or you baked it too long. Get to know your oven, check before the time's up, and pull it out when a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs.

How do I keep my food fresh longer?

Let food cool before you put it away. Use containers with good lids. Most things last 3-4 days in the fridge. When in doubt, freeze it.

Can I make this ahead?

Most soups, stews, and casseroles freeze well. Pasta and rice dishes too. Just cook them a bit less if you plan to reheat later.

I'm just starting to cook. Where do I begin?

Start with our basic recipes. Learn to cook eggs, make a good pasta, roast vegetables. Build from there. Everyone starts somewhere.

How do I cook rice that's not mushy?

Rinse it first. Use the right amount of water. Once it boils, turn it low, cover, and leave it alone. Let it rest after cooking. No peeking while it cooks.
