Sweet Almond Pastry Delight (Print Version)

01 - 1 large egg
02 - 1 tablespoon water
03 - 8 oz almond paste
04 - ¼ cup granulated sugar
05 - 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
06 - 1 sheet puff pastry
07 - ¼ cup sliced almonds

# Instructions:

01 - Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
02 - In a small bowl, whisk together egg and water. Set aside.
03 - In a food processor or stand mixer, combine almond paste, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
04 - Unfold the puff pastry sheet on the prepared baking sheet. Gently roll it with a rolling pin to slightly enlarge and thin out the sheet.
05 - Cut slits 1 inch apart along both sides of the pastry rectangle, leaving a 1/2-inch border in the center for the almond paste mixture. Place the almond paste filling down the center of the pastry.
06 - Starting at one end, fold the pastry strips diagonally over the almond mixture, alternating sides to create a braided effect. Lightly brush the pastry with the egg wash. Sprinkle with sliced almonds.
07 - Bake for 10 minutes at 400°F, then lower the temperature to 375°F and continue baking for 17-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
08 - Let the pastry cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes. Slice and serve.

# Notes:

01 - Thaw puff pastry in the refrigerator overnight when possible. If thawing at room temperature, use as soon as it is pliable.
02 - Almond paste is key for flavor and should not be substituted or reduced.
03 - Nutella can be added on top of the almond mixture before braiding for an extra indulgent variation.
