Texas Toast Sloppy Joes (Print version)

Open-faced Texas toast piled with saucy beef, sweet-tangy sauce, and bubbly melted cheese. A 30-minute family dinner that is easier than it looks.

# Ingredients:

For the sloppy joe filling

01 - 1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef
02 - 3/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion
03 - 1/2 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
04 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
05 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
06 - 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
07 - 3/4 cup ketchup
08 - 2 tablespoons tomato paste
09 - 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
10 - 1 tablespoon brown sugar
11 - 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

For the toast and topping

12 - 8 slices frozen garlic Texas toast
13 - 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
14 - 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

# Instructions:

01 - Cook the ground beef, onion, and bell pepper in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the meat is browned and the vegetables are tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Drain excess fat.
02 - Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, and pepper. Simmer gently for 10 to 12 minutes until the sauce thickens and turns glossy.
03 - Arrange the frozen Texas toast on a baking sheet and bake according to package directions, usually 5 to 7 minutes at 425°F, until golden at the edges.
04 - Spoon the hot filling over the baked toast, top generously with shredded cheese, and broil on high for 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned. Watch closely to avoid burning.
05 - Sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired and serve immediately while the cheese is still stretchy.

# Good to know:

01 - Best served immediately while the cheese is still stretchy and the toast is crisp.
