Subway BMT Casserole (Print version)

A hot, melty Subway BMT-style casserole with toasted bread, pepperoni, salami, ham, provolone, mozzarella, and fresh sub toppings.

# Ingredients:

For the casserole

01 - 4 Italian sub rolls, cut into 1-inch pieces, about 8 cups
02 - 2 tablespoons olive oil
03 - 1 cup (240 ml) marinara sauce
04 - 2 tablespoons Italian dressing
05 - 1 teaspoon dried oregano
06 - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
07 - 6 oz (170 g) thin-sliced deli ham, chopped
08 - 4 oz (115 g) Genoa salami, chopped
09 - 3 oz (85 g) pepperoni slices, halved
10 - 8 slices provolone cheese, torn
11 - 1 1/2 cups (170 g) shredded mozzarella
12 - 1/3 cup sliced banana peppers, drained
13 - 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced

For finishing

14 - 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
15 - 1 medium tomato, diced
16 - 2 tablespoons Italian dressing, plus more to taste
17 - Black pepper, to taste

# Instructions:

01 - Preheat the oven to 375°F. Spread the bread pieces on a sheet pan, toss with olive oil, and bake for 8-10 minutes until dry at the edges.
02 - Stir the marinara, Italian dressing, oregano, and garlic powder together in a small bowl.
03 - Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Add half the toasted bread, half the ham, salami, pepperoni, sauce, provolone, mozzarella, banana peppers, and red onion. Repeat the layers.
04 - Cover the dish with foil and bake for 15 minutes, until the center is hot and the cheese begins to melt.
05 - Remove the foil and bake 8-10 minutes longer, until the cheese is bubbly and the pepperoni edges are lightly crisp.
06 - Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes. Top with shredded lettuce, diced tomato, a drizzle of Italian dressing, and black pepper before serving.

# Good to know:

01 - Best served right after baking while the cheese is melty and the bread edges are crisp.
02 - Toast the bread before layering to keep the casserole from turning soggy.
03 - Keep fresh toppings separate if storing leftovers.
