# Ingredients:

For the pasta bake

01 - 1 tablespoon olive oil
02 - 1/2 lb (225 g) mild Italian sausage, casings removed if needed
03 - 1/2 lb (225 g) lean ground beef
04 - 1 small yellow onion, diced
05 - 1 green bell pepper, diced
06 - 3 cloves garlic, minced
07 - 24 oz (680 g) marinara sauce or pizza sauce
08 - 2 cups (480 ml) low-sodium chicken broth or water
09 - 10 oz (285 g) short pasta, such as penne, rotini, or bow ties
10 - 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
11 - 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
12 - 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, optional
13 - 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
14 - 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
15 - 1 1/2 cups (170 g) shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
16 - 3 oz (85 g) pepperoni, half chopped and half left in slices
17 - 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese, optional
18 - 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil or parsley, for serving

# Instructions:

01 - Preheat the oven to 425°F. Choose a wide oven-safe Dutch oven, braiser, or deep skillet with a tight-fitting lid.
02 - Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the Italian sausage and ground beef and cook for 5-6 minutes, breaking them into crumbles, until no pink remains. Drain excess grease if needed.
03 - Add the onion and bell pepper and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
04 - Stir in the marinara sauce, broth, dry pasta, Italian seasoning, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, cover, then reduce to a gentle simmer. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the pasta is just tender.
05 - Stir in 1/2 cup mozzarella and the chopped pepperoni. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella over the top, then add the sliced pepperoni and parmesan if using.
06 - Transfer the uncovered pot to the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Rest for 3-5 minutes, then finish with basil or parsley and serve warm.

# Good to know:

01 - Ready in about 30 minutes with no separate pasta pot.
02 - Use an oven-safe pot so the stovetop sauce can go straight into the oven.
03 - Add a splash of hot water if the sauce gets too thick before the pasta is tender.
