Simple Monte Cristo Style Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Print version)

A fast Monte Cristo style grilled cheese with ham, turkey, Swiss, golden egg-dipped bread, powdered sugar, and raspberry jam.

# Ingredients:

For the sandwiches

01 - 4 slices sturdy white sandwich bread or brioche
02 - 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
03 - 4 slices Swiss cheese, about 3 oz (85 g)
04 - 4 thin slices deli ham, about 3 oz (85 g)
05 - 4 thin slices deli turkey, about 3 oz (85 g)

For the egg coating

06 - 2 large eggs
07 - 2 tablespoons milk
08 - 1/8 teaspoon salt
09 - 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
10 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided

For serving

11 - 2 tablespoons raspberry jam, warmed if desired
12 - 1 teaspoon powdered sugar, optional

# Instructions:

01 - In a shallow dish, whisk the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
02 - Spread Dijon on 2 bread slices. Layer each with Swiss, ham, turkey, and more Swiss, then close with the remaining bread. Press gently so the layers hold together.
03 - Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture for a few seconds per side. Let the excess drip off so the bread is coated but not soaked.
04 - Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sandwiches and cook for 3-4 minutes, until the bottom is golden brown.
05 - Add the remaining butter, flip the sandwiches, and cook for 3-4 minutes more, until golden and the cheese has melted. Cover the pan for the last minute if needed.
06 - Rest for 1 minute, slice in halves, dust lightly with powdered sugar if using, and serve hot with raspberry jam for dipping.

# Good to know:

01 - Best served right after cooking while the crust is crisp.
02 - Use medium-low heat so the cheese melts before the egg coating gets too dark.
