Loaded New York Italian Hero (Print version)

A deli-style New York Italian hero stacked with cured meats, provolone, crisp vegetables, peppers, and oregano dressing.

# Ingredients:

For the dressing

01 - 1/4 cup (60 ml) extra-virgin olive oil
02 - 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
03 - 1 teaspoon dried oregano
04 - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
05 - 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
06 - 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the heroes

07 - 2 large Italian hero rolls, about 12 inches each
08 - 6 oz (170 g) sliced provolone cheese
09 - 8 oz (225 g) thin-sliced deli ham
10 - 6 oz (170 g) thin-sliced Genoa salami
11 - 4 oz (115 g) thin-sliced capicola
12 - 4 oz (115 g) thin-sliced mortadella
13 - 3 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
14 - 2 medium tomatoes, thinly sliced
15 - 1/2 small red onion, very thinly sliced
16 - 1/2 cup sliced banana peppers, drained
17 - 1/4 cup cherry pepper spread or chopped hot cherry peppers

# Instructions:

01 - Whisk the olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a small bowl until combined.
02 - Split the rolls lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Toast the cut sides in a 375°F oven for 4-5 minutes, just until lightly crisp.
03 - Toss the shredded lettuce with 1-2 tablespoons of the dressing. Keep the rest for drizzling over the sandwich.
04 - Place provolone along the bottom of each roll. Fold in the ham, salami, capicola, and mortadella in even layers.
05 - Spread cherry pepper relish over the meats. Add the dressed lettuce, tomato slices, red onion, and banana peppers.
06 - Drizzle each hero with a little more dressing. Close the rolls, wrap in parchment, press gently for 5 minutes, then slice each roll into 2 portions.

# Good to know:

01 - Best served the same day while the lettuce is crisp.
02 - For parties, wrap portions in parchment so the filling stays tucked in.
