Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy (Print version)

Juicy hamburger steaks simmered in a savory mushroom gravy for a cozy one-skillet dinner.

# Ingredients:

For the hamburger steaks

01 - 1 lb (450 g) 85/15 ground beef
02 - 1/3 cup (35 g) plain breadcrumbs
03 - 1 large egg
04 - 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
05 - 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
06 - 1 teaspoon onion powder
07 - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
08 - 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
09 - 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
10 - 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the mushroom gravy

11 - 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
12 - 8 oz (225 g) cremini mushrooms, sliced
13 - 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
14 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
15 - 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
16 - 2 cups (480 ml) low-sodium beef broth
17 - 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
18 - 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
19 - Salt and black pepper, to taste
20 - 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

# Instructions:

01 - In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently just until combined.
02 - Divide the mixture into 4 oval patties about 3/4 inch thick. Press a shallow dent in the center of each patty to help it cook evenly.
03 - Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Transfer to a plate. They will finish cooking in the gravy.
04 - Reduce heat to medium and add butter to the same skillet. Add mushrooms and onion. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring often, until the mushrooms release their liquid and begin to brown.
05 - Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme until smooth.
06 - Return the patties and any juices to the skillet. Simmer gently for 8-10 minutes, spooning gravy over the top, until the patties reach 160°F and the gravy coats a spoon. Season to taste and finish with parsley.
