02 - 3 tablespoons ketchup
03 - 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
04 - 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
05 - 1 teaspoon white vinegar
06 - 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
07 - 1/8 teaspoon fine salt
08 - 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

For the fries and toppings

09 - 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
10 - 1 teaspoon neutral oil
11 - 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
12 - 1/4 teaspoon fine salt, plus more for fries
13 - 1 bag (28 oz or 790 g) frozen shoestring fries
14 - 6 slices American cheese

# Instructions:

01 - In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, mustard, vinegar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Refrigerate while you cook the onions and fries.
02 - Heat the butter and oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and salt, then cook for 12-15 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden brown.
03 - Cook the frozen fries according to the package directions, using the oven or air fryer. Cook to the crisp end of the time range and season lightly with salt while hot.
04 - Set the oven to broil. Arrange the hot fries on a lined sheet pan, top with American cheese slices, and broil for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted. Watch carefully.
05 - Transfer the cheesy fries to a serving platter. Spoon the grilled onions over the top and drizzle with the chilled sauce. Serve immediately.
