Brush both sides of the bacon with BBQ sauce. Cook for an additional 1–2 minutes, flipping once, until glossy and caramelized. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.

Toast sandwich buns in a skillet with a small amount of butter or under the broiler until golden and lightly crisped.

If using cheddar, place a slice on the lower half of each bun and broil for 1–2 minutes until melted and bubbling.

On the bottom half of each bun, arrange cheese (if using), 3 strips of BBQ bacon, 2 tomato slices, a generous portion of shredded lettuce, and drizzle with ranch dressing.
